How the Rune Devices Work

Rune devices combine an object rune with an effect rune, and an input machine powers its linked output when the selected condition is met. Plant runes identify the affected object, effect runes specify its action or state, and a watcher eye supplies Observe only while it can see a player.

02

Match the Object Rune With the Required Effect

Rune or EffectWhat It Controls
Plus-shaped object runeChooses an object type, such as an energy plant, blocker plant, platform plant, Pushcoli, songflower, or watcher eye.
Triangular effect runeSpecifies an effect such as Activate, Big, Small, Ghost, or Observe. The machine's role in the connection determines whether that pair supplies a condition or receives powered output.
Ghost effect on an obstructionPhases blocking plants or platforms, allowing the route through the obstruction to become usable.
Small effect on a hedgeShrinks obstructing hedges to clear the route they are blocking.
Big effect on a platformRaises platforms so you can use their changed position to progress.
Watcher eye with ObserveProvides its condition while a player remains in sight. A partner's position can therefore determine whether the connected machine works.
03

Position Your Partner Before Changing the Circuit

Keep a partner in the intended watcher's line of sight whenever the connected machinery depends on Observe. The Explorer using the Hook Gun can then connect powered energy plants while the other maintains visibility. Agree on who will hold that position before starting a connection that needs the eye.

Before entering the fourth room, preserve the Hook-energy rune needed by the hub. Check where that rune is being used before continuing. This keeps it available for the hub setup that still requires it.

04

Follow the Test-Room Route and Finish the Hub

The progression is room one → hub → room two → hub → room three → hub → room four → hub. Return to the hub between test rooms and apply the object-and-effect rules to each linked setup. Save the final hub activation for your return from room four.

  1. Insert the relevant object rune into the device. This selects the plant or watcher represented by that machine's object-and-effect pair.
  2. Insert the required effect rune. Use Ghost to phase an obstruction, Small to shrink a blocking hedge, or Big to raise a platform where the route requires that change.
  3. Have your partner stand within the intended watcher's sight whenever the input requires Observe. Detection supplies the condition needed by its linked machinery.
  4. Use the Hook Gun to connect powered energy plants where the route requires a connection. Keep your partner visible to the watcher if that power depends on Observe.
  5. Surrender your carried room runes at the exit airlock. Each Explorer must hand over their room runes to proceed through the exit.
  6. Return to the hub after completing each test room. Continue through the remaining rooms in the route above until you return from room four.
  7. Activate hub machines 1–6 after returning from room four. These machines form part of the final setup needed to release the Theta Splice keys.
  8. Activate both hub energy plants. Together with the activated hub machines, this releases two Theta Splice keys, one for each Explorer.
05

Check These Conditions When a Device Stays Inactive

  • Check both rune slots. A device can appear inactive when either slot is empty, even if the other contains the object or effect you intended to use.
  • Check the upstream input. The output depends on its linked condition being powered, so inspect that connection before replacing runes in the device that appears stuck.
  • Check watcher visibility from both players' positions. If the intended eye cannot see either Explorer, it cannot supply Observe; place a partner in its sight while the linked machine is needed.
  • Recheck any rune you recently removed. Removing a rune can remove an active effect from the required object, interrupting a route or condition that had been working.
  • Check both inventories when an airlock will not let you continue. Both Explorers must surrender their carried room runes, so checking only your own inventory can leave the exit requirement unfinished.
